Burnell V. ‘Barney’ Smith
Oct. 25, 1925 — April 12, 2001

WOODBURN — Burnell Smith, 75, of Salem died Thursday. (MARION CO.)

He served in the Army during World War II and lived in Scarville,(WINNEBAGO CO.) Iowa, for 25 years. He moved to Woodburn in 1973. He began a business, Smith’s Excavating, which he owned and operated, retiring in 1987. He belonged to Eagles and enjoyed gold prospecting, hunting, fishing and traveling to Arizona.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Lund), whom he married in 1949; daughters, Diane Roppe of Aurora, Linda Smith Copic of Portland; six brothers and sisters, all of Iowa and Minnesota; and two grandsons.

Visiting will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
