Donald Eric Soderling (1922-2009)

Donald Eric Soderling passed away peacefully from natural causes on Christmas day at the home of his eldest son, surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born into the Christian family of Einar and Emma Soderling on March 22, 1922, at Willmar, Minn. At the age of six, he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, S. D. In 1936, the family moved to Forest City, Iowa, where he completed high school.

He joined the Navy in 1942 and was assigned to the destroyer USS Niblack DD 424. It operated in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea as an escort vessel and anti-submarine defense. The ship also took part in seven invasions.

After being discharged at the end of WWII, he attended Waldorf College where he met his future wife, Audrey Mathiason. They were married Sept. 11, 1948. He graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in forestry.

Don and Audrey moved to Emmett, Idaho, in 1958. He was employed as a superintendent by Boise Cascade and retired after 25 years. He also owned and operated a cherry and apple orchard for more than 20 years. He was a faithful and active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, holding various offices. In 2002, Don and Audrey moved to Star, Idaho, to be closer to their family.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; four sons, Dirk (Dixie), Roger (Marcia), Paul and Brian (Therese); one daughter Rebecca (Steve); eight grandchildren and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother Jack (Betty) of Forest City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild and two brothers.

Don was an honorable and God fearing man, who will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Graveside service will be held at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise, Idaho. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday Dec. 30, 2009, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Emmett. Friends called Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at the Potter Funeral Chapel from 4 until 8 p.m. and the family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. at the chapel.
