Darlene L. Tweeten
July 27, 1936 - December 14, 2015

Darlene L. Tweeten, 79, of Forest City, died on Monday, December 14, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Darlene L, Tweeten, a daughter of Wallace and Ida (Oppedahl) Torkelson, was born on July 27, 1936, in rural Rockwell, Iowa. In 1942, her family moved to rural Forest City. In 1953, she graduated from Forest City High School. On March 4, 1956, she married Walden C. Tweeten at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union, three sons were born, Bennie, Dennis, and Terry.

Before she retired, Darlene had worked for the Winnebago County Extension, at the Winnebago County Courthouse, for GTE Telephone, and eventually, at People’s Natural Gas. After retiring, she stayed active with her own sewing business (Darlene’s Country Sew) and as a food sampler at Bill’s Family Foods. A lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Darlene, also, belonged to the Red Hat Society, the Leland Women’s Study Club, and the Sons of Norway.

Music played a major role in Darlene’s life. She played the accordion, the guitar, and the organ, and she sang as well. A member of the Leland Ramblers with her late husband, she and Walden shared their musical talents for many years throughout North Iowa. For Darlene, playing music came naturally since she played by ear. She, also, enjoyed gardening, cooking, quilting, and dancing. In 2010, she took her very first plane ride in order to attend a Norwegian Festival (Norsk Hostfest) in Minot, North Dakota. Most of all, however, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew loved her.

Darlene is survived by her children: Bennie, Dennis (Kelly Fredrickson), and Terry Tweeten, and his wife, Shelby, all of Forest City; her grandchildren, Chelsey Faber, and her husband, Andrew, Travis Tweeten, and his girlfriend, Erin Cox, Tyler Tweeten, and Shaden Tweeten; and her siblings, Florence Nelson, of Lake Mills, Beverly Erickson, and her husband, Norman, of Seeley Lake, Montana, and Larry and Richard Torkelson, both of Forest City; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Ida Torkelson; her husband, Walden, in 1995; her brothers, Donald and Leroy Torkelson (in infancy); and her brother-in-law, Leonard Nelson.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St., Forest City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, December 18, 2015, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. Memorials may be directed to the Darlene Tweeten memorial fund in care of the family.
