FOREST CITY – Dennis D. Harringa, 66, of Ankeny, formerly of Forest City, died on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Dennis Dean Harringa, a son of Benjamin and Emily (Book) Harringa, was born on April 11, 1949, in Forest City. After graduating from Forest City High School in 1967, he continued his education in Mason City at NIACC. On November 1, 1969, he married Judy Palas at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. They lived in Forest City where Dennis worked at the light plant. In 2007, however, he and Judy moved to Ankeny. In Urbandale, Dennis found work in the maintenance department at Stew Hansen Dodge, a job he held until he retired in April of 2014.

For many years, Dennis served as a Cub Scout and Eagle Scout leader as well as association secretary at the Super Bowl in Forest City. In addition, he umpired girls’ softball games at Waldorf College and throughout the north Iowa area for over thirty years. Otherwise, he enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and playing cards. Indeed, an avid bowler for forty years, he, also, belonged to various card clubs. Most of all, however, he liked playing with his grandchildren.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Judy, of Ankeny; his son, Ryan (Emily) Harringa, of Pleasant Hill; two grandchildren, Daniel and Chelsea Harringa; his step-mother, Anna Harringa of Forest City; a brother, Dan (Kathy) Harringa, of Forest City; three step-sisters, Leann Troxel, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Becky Fisher, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Kathy Leuwerke, of Thompson, Iowa; a step-brother, David (Nancy) Fisher, of Rapid City, South Dakota; and a brother-in-law, Lee Palas, of Richmond, Virginia; as well as by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Danelle Harringa; his parents, Benjamin and Emily Harringa; his parents-in-law, LuVern and Vera Palas; three step-brothers, Bob Fisher, Bob Troxel, and Danny Leuwerke; and a sister-in-law, Donna Palas.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, December 14, 2015, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Inurnment will be in Madison Township Cemetery south of Forest City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. The Cataldo Schott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
