Bernice J. Engebretson
(February 4, 1914 - January 26, 2015)

Bernice J. Engebretson, 100, of Scarville, Iowa, died on Monday, January 26, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society-Forest City, Iowa.

Bernice was born on February 4, 1914, in Aurora, Illinois, to John T. and Bertha (Olson) Johnson. Confirmed at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa, she graduated from Rake High School in 1932.

On December 22, 1942, Bernice married Harold E. Engebretson at Liberty Lutheran Church. They made their home in rural Scarville where Harold farmed and Bernice became a loving and devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Patient, kind, and caring beyond just her family, she had a way of making everyone in her midst feel cared for and welcomed.

She kept active quilting, attending church circle, sewing, and baking. Her family has many wonderful memories of making Lefsa on Thanksgiving Friday. In addition to this annual event, Bernice enjoyed baking bread, rolls, and cakes. She simply didn’t sit still too often.

Survivors include her children, Larry (Mary) Engebretson, of Liberty, Missouri, Berneda (Steven) Lawrence, of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Charles (Janice) Engebretson, of Sartell, Minnesota, and Marcus Engebretson, of Mason City, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Hans (Erin), Jeff (Meredith), Karl (Abbey), and Ryan Engebretson; Chad (Angela) Lawrence; Sara (David) Redepenning, and Leslie Wentzel; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Brenna, Braelyn, Olin, and Otto Engebretson; Blake, Emma, Lindsey, and Samuel Lawrence; Allison and Madie Redepenning; and Bergen, Lena, and Klara Wentzel; and two sisters, Audrey Boekelman and Judy Sorenson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Ellen Engebretson; three sisters, Agnes Gunderson, Louise Skogen, and Avis Weringa; and four brothers, Lawrence and Arthur Johnson and two in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa, with Pastor Spering Scott officiating. Burial will take place at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation for Bernice will be on Friday, January 30, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
