Gilman Odin Trostheim
(May 10, 1922 - December 30, 2014)

U.S. Veteran Gilman O. Trostheim, age 92, of Scarville, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Gilman Odin Trostheim was born on the family farm in Winnebago County, Iowa, on May 10, 1922, the second child of Thom and Hattie (Olson) Trostheim. He attended country school in Logan Township and helped his father farm until he entered the US Army. Just as World War II was ending, Uncle Sam sent him to Japan. After serving his country, he came home and bought his first farm.

Gilman met Burnette Irene Kaasa of Hanlontown in Forest City, Iowa. On August 15, 1948, he married her at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: Cheryl Renee, Larry Alan, Vicki Lynn, and Steven Odean.

Gilman spent his entire life on the farm, growing corn and soybeans. He, also, enjoyed raising sheep. In addition, Gilman worked for Winnebago Industries, first in the plant and later as a driver. While delivering motorhomes, he was able to see and appreciate many parts of the country including Alaska. At one time, he was Winnebago’s oldest driver.

Gilman was a longtime member of the Kiester American Legion. In his earlier years, he took many fishing trips. In his later years, he looked forward to spending coffee time with his friends in Lake Mills.

Gilman, especially, valued his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Very proud to have a great-grandson, Gavin Hagen, born on his birthday, May 10, Gilman nicknamed him “Little Gilly.”

To cherish his memory, Gilman leaves behind his four children, Cheryl (Dennis) Swanson, Larry Trostheim, Vicki (Bradley) Hagen, and Steven Trostheim; seven grandchildren, Cassidy and Lacey Hagen and Brent, Corey (Dana), Eric, Michael, and Nick Thilges; and four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Charlie, and Harper Thilges; and Gavin Hagen; two sisters, Clarice (Vern) Olson, of Clarks Grove, Minnesota, and Helen Young, of Toluca, Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Harriet Trostheim, of Northwood, Iowa; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Gilman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Burnette; his brother, Elmer Trostheim; his sister, Ann Cornell; and three brothers-in-law, George Young, Roger Anderson, and Kenneth Christenson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje, Iowa, with Pastor Spering Scott officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Kiester, Minnesota, American Legion Post #454. Visitation will be on Friday, January 2, 2015, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
