Richard was born on December 23, 1950, in Forest City, Iowa, a son of Irvin and Pauline (Youngquist) Hanson. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1970. Then, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War before his honorable discharge in 1972. On September 1, 1979, he married Sandra K. Hanson in Crystal Lake, Iowa. As a young man, Richard farmed and worked at the Farmers’ Coop Gas Station. In 1983, he went to work at Winnebago Industries where he continued to work until he no longer could because of his declining health.
Richard enjoyed camping, collecting John Deere toy tractors, and building dollhouses. Treasuring his family, friends, and neighbors, he, always, left his doors open to them.
