A son of John and Grace (Roetmen) Ver Hoef, John Ver Hoef, Jr., was born on November 19, 1926, in Hollandale, Minnesota. On November 9, 1947, he married Marjorie E. Peterson at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa. To this union, one son, Robert was born.

Drafted into the United States Army in 1952 during the Korean Conflict, he served sixteen months overseas. He was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1954.

For many years, John worked for Alfred Petersen Construction Company as a carpenter before he established his own construction business which he ran until he retired. In addition, he served on the Leland City Council and, as a fireman, on the Leland Fire Department.

John enjoyed hunting. Indeed, he took many hunting trips to Wyoming with his friends and his son. He also enjoyed traveling, gardening, and listening to music, especially patriotic songs. For fun, he collected Studebakers. A member of the International and State Studebaker Clubs, he enjoyed traveling to various meetings and events with other enthusiasts.

A life-long member of the Forest City United Methodist Church, he served on various church boards and ushered. He was also a longtime member of the Leland V.F.W. Post# 6161, the Forest City American Legion, and, with his wife Marjorie, the Winnebago Historical Society. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Rev. Charles Layton officiating. Inurnment will be held at the Madison Township Cemetery. Following his wishes, his remains were cremated, and there will be no visitation.
