Marlys I. Troe
(April 25, 1949 - September 8, 2014)

Marlys Irene (Miller) Troe, 65, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on September 8, 2014, at her home after a year-long fight with pancreatic cancer. She truly exemplified the meaning of the phrase, “live each day like it’s the last,” after her diagnosis in May 2013.

One of five children, Marlys was born on April 25, 1949, at St. Olaf’s Hospital in Austin, Minnesota, to Orville and LaDonna (Perkins) Miller. Baptized on May 16, 1959, at St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church in Austin and confirmed there as well on May 31, 1964, she graduated from Austin High School in 1967.

Marlys married Gary Dean Troe on February 4, 1970. The date had special significance for both of them because it was Gary’s mother’s, Adeline’s, birthday and Marlys’ oldest sister’s, Judy’s, birthday.

Marlys and Gary were blessed with three children, Renea (Troy) Hagen, of Twin Lakes, Minnesota, Barry Troe, Sr., of Thompson, Iowa, and Meridee (Mark) Ansel, of Kanawha, Iowa; and nine grandchildren, Jaden, Kevin, and Makayla Ansel; Alexander and Brandi (Nick Jepson) Hagen; Amanda (Brandon) Hovey; and Barry, Jr., (Krista), Marissa, and Andrew Troe.

Very caring, kind, and compassionate as well as very soft hearted, Marlys loved her family and friends and would do almost anything for them. She loved family gatherings and picnics, and was always making sure they had plenty of food. Moreover, whenever they had a family picnic, she could be found outside playing softball, volleyball, basketball, or even football with her grandkids. Most recently, however, she had been playing bean bags with them. She also loved to fish, travel locally, camp, gamble, bake for the holidays, and play board games with her family. She was especially proud of her lefse. In addition, she loved anything patriotic, and she collected many angel trinkets.

Known as Grandma Gadget, Marlys loved carrying the latest, greatest camera as well as sitting at her computer. In her spare time, she enjoyed keeping up with friends old and new on Facebook.

Marlys worked in various factories until 1980 when she joined the workforce at Universal Circuits. In 2003, when Universal Circuits changed products and its name to Dielectric Corporation, she went to Menominee Falls, Wisconsin, for a four-week training course as a machinist. In 2009, after she was laid off, she turned her layoff into retirement in 2011.

In May of 2007, Marlys quit smoking after twenty-four years. She, proudly, remained smoke free.

Marlys is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Gary; her beloved dog, Molly; three children; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her siblings, Judy Weatherly, of Stewartville, Minnesota, Paulette Page, of Elysian, Minnesota, and Paul Miller, of Austin; and eight nieces and eight nephews; as well as by several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her maternal and paternal grandparents; her sister, Carol Earl; her grandson, Lucas John Troe; her father- and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Adeline (Crane) Troe; her sisters-in-law, Donna Christianson and LaVonne Thomsen; her brothers-in-law, Merlyn Sheldon, Sr., Donald Earl, Larry Troe, and Carlyle (Curt) Thomsen; her nephew, Larry Weatherly; and her great-niece, Nichole Thomsen; as well as by several aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, September 11, 2014, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church of rural Carpenter, Iowa, located at 4598 Zinnia Avenue, St. Ansgar, Iowa, with Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Deer Creek Cemetery in rural Carpenter, Iowa.
