Laverne Cox
July 23, 1940 – March 15, 2011

Sun City, Arizona

Laverne Cox, Cliff as he preferred to be called, was born on July 23, 1940, at his home in Leland, Iowa. He attended country elementary school and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1958. After completing a carpentry course at a trade school, he made a career out of building homes throughout the Albert Lea area.

On Sept. 3, 1960, Cliff married Jean Ulstad in Casper, Wyoming. They lived in Casper for around ten years before returning to the Midwest. For most of their married life, they lived in Albert Lea where they raised four children: Ron, Arlene, Audra, and Janel. They were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

Cliff and Jean retired in Sun City West, Arizona, more than seven years ago. As a couple, they enjoyed club square dancing both in Minnesota and most recently in Arizona. They truly treasured their retirement years in Arizona from the luxury of having fruit trees right at hand in their own back yard to just being able to get out and enjoy all the winter months, old snow shovels left behind.

A true outdoorsman, Cliff had a great love of the outdoors. An avid wild game hunter, he enjoyed fishing as well. Undoubtedly, people will most remember his sense of humor. Loving a good laugh, he typically began his conversations with a joke, not always, however, the most appropriate one given the circumstances. He also enjoyed time spent with his eight beautiful grandchildren, who will miss him dearly.

He was a wonderful husband, a dear father, a special grandpa, and great friend to many! With family and friends, Cliff and Jean celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary this past September and Cliff’s 70th birthday at the same time.

We will always remember you, Cliff.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Jean T. Cox; his children: Ronald Cox, Arlene (David) Long, Audra Cox, and Janel (Patrick) Lacke; his brothers, Kenneth (Mavis) Cox and Wallace (Elaine) Cox; his brother-in-law, the Rev. Harold Krentz; his sisters, Dorothy Olson and Georgia (Wayne) Andersen; and his grandchildren: Jordan, Cody, Jenna, Logan, Taylor, Bain, Jaren, and Julia.

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mabel Cox; his brother, Virgil Cox; and his sister, Vivian Krentz.

Funeral services for Laverne “Cliff” Cox, age 70, of Sun City, Arizona, will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. Wayne Halvorson officiating. Interment will be in the Center Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, rural Leland, Iowa.
