Raymond M. Branstad
[August 26, 1916]* - April 1, 2009

Raymond M. Branstad, age 92, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on April 1, 2009.

Ordained in 1943 as a Pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Synod, he served his Lord in parishes in Suttons Bay and Holton, Michigan, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Duluth, Minneapolis, and Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Mayville, North Dakota, among others before retiring in 1995. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Regents of Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, Minnesota, and as the college president from 1970 to1978.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of forty-three years, Lois (Bayer) Branstad; his parents, Elmer and Anna (Peterson) Branstad; his sister, Bernice Peterson Long; and his brother, Floyd Branstad.

He is survived by his son, John (Wendy) Branstad; his daughters, Nancy (Matt) Luttman, Margaret (Kris) Ostman, Judy (Keven) Kassulker, and Kirsten (Tom) Burcham; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Avis Amundson; as well as by nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

A funeral service was held at Grace Lutheran Church, Vero Beach, Florida. Visitation for his Minnesota family and friends will be on Friday, April 10, 2009, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, at Gill Brothers Southwest Chapel, 5801 Lyndale Ave S. Interment will be at Center Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran College, 700 Luther Dr., Mankato, Minnesota 56001.
