May 2, 1933 - December 25, 2008FOREST CITY - Loretta R. Nelson, age 86, of Forest City, died on Thursday, December 25, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
Loretta was born in Northwood, Iowa, on May 2, 1922, the daughter of Gilbert and Alvina (Lau) Peterson. She received her education in Northwood, graduating from Northwood High School. She, then, furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After earning a Normal Certification, she taught in rural schools near Joice, Iowa, for three years.
On June 11, 1944, Loretta married Kenton Nelson. They made their home in Mt. Valley Township their entire married lives. An active partner in the farming operation, she took care of the chickens, marketed the eggs, and always had a big garden.
A member of Winnebago Lutheran Church, Loretta also participated in the Martha Circle and Ladies Aid. She served as a Lutheran League Advisor, worked with the 4-H Clubs, and joined the Forest City PTA. She was one of the charter members of O.A.O., a women's club started in the 1950s. At election times, she also enjoyed serving as a poll worker.
A gifted seamstress, Loretta sewed dresses for all occasions for her daughter, Jean. She enjoyed spending time with her family and loved going for long drives. Fortunately, she was able to remain in her home at the end, cared for by her son, David, and daughter, Jean.
She is survived by her children: Robert (Vicky) Nelson, of Orono, Minnesota, David Nelson, of Forest City, and Jean Redig, of Forest City; and two grandchildren, Lisa Redig, of Ames, Iowa, and Michael Redig, of Forest City; twelve siblings: Marjorie Grigutis, of Munster, Indiana, Phyllis Cordera, of Calumet City, Illinois, Belean Johnson, of Pensacola, Florida, Palmer Peterson, of Twin Lakes, Minnesota, Lemoine Peterson, of Hastings, Minnesota, Arnold and Gordon Peterson, both of Glenville, Minnesota, Genevieve Kirsch, Gaylord Peterson, and Norman Peterson, all of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Dorothy Dempewolf, of Denver, Colorado, and Maynard Peterson, residing in Indiana.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenton; her brothers, Harlan and Arthur Peterson, and a sister, Rena Christensen.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at 1:30 PM at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, December 29, 2008, at the funeral home and an hour prior to services at the church.
