Ruby Venetia Okland
(July 29, 1922 - April 27, 2007)

Ruby V. Okland, age 84, of Lake Mills, died on Friday, April 27, 2007, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Ruby Venetia (Carlson) Okland was born on July 29, 1922, near Leland, Iowa, to Eddie and Alma (Vold) Carlson. She attended Leland High School, graduating in 1940.

On April 28, 1942, Ruby married Luther Okland at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa. Blessed with six children, they made their home in rural Lake Mills. Ruby spent many years working in the cafeteria at both the Lake Mills Community School and later at the Lake Mills Care Center. A member of Center Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, she actively took part in the Ladies Aid.

Ruby also enjoyed spending time playing bridge, having coffee with her friends, crocheting, and making crafts. She was a Gold Star Mother of the Lake Mills American Legion Auxiliary.

Ruby will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to all who met her.

Survivors include her husband, Luther, of Lake Mills; her children, Raymond Okland, of Houston, Texas, Jayne (Jim) Edwards, of Sioux City, Iowa, Jeanne (Richard) Duben, of Forestville, California, Jennie (Steve) Woerner, of Huffman, Texas, Scott Okland, of San Antonio, Texas, and her beloved son, Vernon, whom she lost on May 4, 1970; nine grandchildren, Thomas (Becky) Edwards, of Yutan, Nebraska, David (Jennifer) Edwards, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Angela (Raye) Farquhar, of Atlanta, Georgia, Valeri Okland, of Houston, Texas, Wade Okland (fiancée, Lisa Scheid), of Houston, Texas, Ryan Kloster (fiancée Kisha Davis), of Houston, Texas, Sara (Patrick) Landels, of Huffman, Texas, Laura Kloster, also of Huffman, Texas, and Daniel Okland, of Hondo, Texas; nine great grandchildren, Jill, Cole, Kelsey, Cade, and Jack Edwards, Reese Farquhar, and Jackson, Alexis, and Gunnar Okland; a sister, Lois Schmidt, of Chico, California; and two foreign exchange students, Hendrick Haase from Germany (1972 to 1973); and Arto Forsten, from Finland (1974 to 1975).

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Vernon, in 1970; three brothers, Vernon, Dean, and Richard Carlson; and a sister, Dorris Knutson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, April 30, 2007, at Center Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Rev. Thomas Rank officiating. Burial will take place in the Center Evangelical Church Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 29, 2007, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
