Goodwin Theodor (Goodie) Bergerud, age 78, of Forest City, died on Saturday, October 14, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City after a lengthy illness.

Goodie Bergerud was born at home in Aastead Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, on January 10, 1928, the son of Hans and Hilda (Ongstad) Bergerud. He attended school in Aastead Township through the 8th grade before leaving to work on the farm with his father.

On November 27, 1946, Goodie enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Panama Canal Zone until his honorable discharge on June 1, 1948.

Goodie married Grace Smidt in 1951. They, subsequently, had five children. Their marriage later ended in divorce. On January 10, 1968, he married Vera Nieman. They made their home in Forest City where Goodie worked as an electrician for the City of Forest City.

Having a love for music, Goodie played the guitar in several bands over time. He enjoyed camping and traveling with Vera as well as working with mechanics and tools on remodeling projects. He had a knack for creating unusual ‘toys’ from old cars, bikes, and motorcycles.

Goodie is survived by two daughters, Sharon Boyd, of Woodland, Alabama, and Barbara (Lloyd) Reddick, of Remlap, Alabama; his sons, Dan (Sandy) Bergerud, of Virginia, Illinois, Steve (Kim) Bergerud, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Michael (Jeanne) Bergerud, of Slidell, Louisiana; his step-children: Peg Long, of Ankeny, Iowa, Ron Nieman, of Mason City, Iowa, Barbara (Michael) Van Hooser, of Russellville, Missouri, Susan (Todd) Kempf, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Kris (Bryan) Runyan, of Ankeny, Iowa; twenty-two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Ugstad, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and Ruth Bryant, of Gardnerville, Nevada; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Schildt and Linda Swanson, of Seward, Nebraska; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
