Creighton "Chic" Fox
October 20, 1916 - October 18, 2005

Creighton “Chic” Fox was born on October 20, 1916, in Forest City to Clyde and Jennie (Smith) Fox. Baptized in the Congregational Church, he graduated from Forest City High School. Because his grandfather, father, and uncles built roads in the area with one hundred fifty mules and horses, he and his older brothers would spend time in the summer visiting the road gang. It was there he was nicknamed “Chic” because he had a pet chicken. The name stayed with him all his life.

He farmed with his father and sold Phisters seed corn. On August 12, 1941, he married Mary Byers of Garner at St. Boniface Catholic Church, joining the Catholic Church at that time. The couple farmed for five years before moving to Forest City in 1946. He worked at Ralph Bowen's Food Store for two years and drove a tank wagon gas truck for Harry Corby’s Mobil Gas Station for three years. In 1951, they purchased Ruby Evanson’s Mobile Gas Station three miles south of Forest City on Highway 69. They renamed it Fox Trading Post. During this time, they raised horses and ponies, owning a Registered Quarter horse from the Tom Elken’s Ranch of Grants, New Mexico, in the 1940s and a palomino named Plaudit’s Golden Fox.

Chic rode in parades and on trail rides. He also entered many horse shows. One large horse show at Nashua proved exciting with his winning first in the Palomino class of thirteen entries, first in the Western Pleasure class of twenty-one entries, and second in the English Pleasure class of five entries.

He served as president of the Rainbow Trail Riders in 1952 when the club was incorporated and belt buckles were issued. He was also active in the Garner Saddle Club. He promoted rodeos, horse sales, and professional wrestling matches out of Minneapolis at the Civic Auditorium with such stars as Vern Gagne, Tiny Mills, and Bob Geigel. He worked at Kayot Forester for five years and operated a USDA licensed kennel for twenty-five years, raising and buying litters of puppies and shipping to pet stores. He enjoyed spending time with his family and having coffee with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Fox, of Forest City; a daughter, Cindy Mary, and her husband, Robert, of Forest City, and his son, Mike Fox, of Denver, Colorado; his granddaughters, Monica Young, and her husband, Scott, of Garner, Brenda Huebsch, and her husband, Tony, of Mitchell, and Carla Mary, of Bennington, New Hampshire; his great-granddaughters, Amy and Katie Young and Micheala and Courtney Huebsch; his brothers, B.C. Fox, of Wayzata, Minnesota, Earl “Toad” Fox, and his wife, Vivian, of Forest City; and his sisters, Margie Brandl, and her husband, Alton, of Mason City, Jennie Mae Nelson, of Clear Lake, and Helen Jean Dutemple, and her husband, Al, of Urbandale, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kay Fox, of Des Moines.
