Bruce A. Osmundson
(January 10, 1926 - October 26, 2012)Bruce Alan Osmundson, age 86, of Alexandria, Minnesota, and formerly of Thompson, died Friday, October 26, 2012, at the age of 86. He was born on January 10, 1926, to Ernest and Veva (Rose) Osmundson in Forest City and, until recently, was a life-long resident of Thompson.
In 1944, he entered the US Air Force where he trained as a navigator. Later, his love of flying led him to become a small aircraft pilot. Also in 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Helgren. They just recently celebrated their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary. To this union, two children were born: Sandra and Scott.
Following his military service, Bruce and Betty returned to Thompson where Bruce worked with his father at Peoples State Bank which his grandfather founded in 1933 after the previous bank in town had closed. Bruce served as a member of the board of directors, cashier, and president until his retirement in 1989.
Retirement to Bruce and Betty meant spending winters at their home in Texas, conveniently located right off a number One fairway. Bruce enjoyed competing in amateur tournaments and playing nationally known courses in the US and Scotland. He also liked instructing anyone interested the sport. Moreover, he had held offices in the Iowa Golf Association, including the presidency. His other hobbies included operating a ham radio, building and flying radio controlled airplanes, bowling, traveling with Betty, fishing at Canada’s Lake of the Woods, picnicking, maintaining the family farm site, and, at age 62, joining the computer age.
Bruce loved life, lived it fully, and often said he was at peace with the world. He was loved and will be missed by many. Those who survive include his wife, Betty; his daughter, Sandra (Dennis) Helseth, of Elbow Lake, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Jason (Andrea) Helseth, of Bay City, Wisconsin, Jessica Engelstad, of Hinckley, Minnesota, Brandon (Toni) Osmundson, of Meridian, Idaho, and Shaun (Maya) Osmundson, of Portland, Oregon; his great-grandchildren: Isaac and Abigail Engelstad, Josef, Scott C., and Lucas Osmundson, and T. J. and Benjamin Helseth; and his brother, Dr. P. J. Osmundson, of Rochester, Minnesota, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Veva Osmundson; his infant brother, Richard; and his son, Scott A. Osmundson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, November 2, 2012, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Mark Decker officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.
