Christene M. Halverson
February 7, 1825 - August 17, 1895

Mrs. Christene M. Halverson died at the home of her son, M. C. Halverson, last Saturday night [August 17, 1895] after a lingering illness of nearly four months. Old age and a general breaking up of the system was the cause of death.

Christene M. Madland was born in Egersund, Norway, February 7, 1825. There she spent her childhood and young womanhood, and there on May 15th, 1847, she was married to Rev. R. Halverson. In 1863 she accompanied her husband to America and three years later settled in Forest City where she resided up to the time of her death.

Mrs. Halverson was the mother of nine children—six of whom survive her. Those living are M. C. Halverson of this city, John R. and Marcelus Halverson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Mrs. S. P. Laceter, Mrs. O. J. Wigdal and Miss Mary Halverson, living in California. Her husband died in 1890 since which time she has lived with her children.

Mrs. Halverson was a member of the Methodist church and was a faithful Christian and a zealous church worker. Even up to the date of her last illness at the advanced age of seventy years, she was prominent in the councils of the Methodist Episcopal society and ever ready to lend a hand to promote the cause of Christianity and the welfare of the church. She was a loving wife and mother, a kind, steadfast and true friend, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The funeral was held Tuesday forenoon in the Norwegian M. E. church in the presence of a large assembly of friends who had gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of one loved so well in life. Rev. G. Abrahamson conducted the sad but beautiful service assisted by Revs. Marcy, Elland and Johanson, after which the remains were borne to their last resting place beside those of her husband in Oakwood cemetery.
