March 14, 1940 - June 3, 2019

Roger A. Monson, age 79, of Lake Mills, died on Monday, June 3, 2019, at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Roger was born on March 14, 1940, at home in Winnebago County to Carl and Fern (Fogue) Monson. After attended country school through the 8th grade, he began helping his dad on the farm.

On November 25, 1958, Roger joined the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, adjacent to the White Sands Proving Grounds. After his honorable discharge on August 24, 1961, he continued to help his dad farm. Then, he married Cheryl Barnett from Clear Lake, and to their union, two children were born, Laura “Lori” and Daniel.

In addition to helping on the farm as a young man, Roger had several jobs before he began his career with Peoples Natural Gas in Lake Mills. He worked there from 1967 to 1996, because of his health. He was a proud volunteer fireman for the Lake Mills Fire Department for 20 years from 1967 to 1987 and helped with the Boy Scouts when Dan was younger.

He is survived by his daughter, Laura “Lori” Monson, of Lake Mills; three grandchildren: Brandy Crail, of Lakota, Iowa; and Zac (Amber) Crail and Ryan Pedersen, of Lake Mills, and six great-grandchildren: Bianca Chiguil; Faith, Nathan, and Paityn Crail; and Neveah and Isaiah Vera; two sisters, Bonnie Berndt, of Glenville, Minnesota, and Carol Engstler, of Garner, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Jackie Monson, of Forest City; and a special friend, Eva Trebil, of Lake Mills; as well as by numerous aunts, nieces, and nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Fern Monson; his son Daniel Monson, in 2018; his brother, Marvin Monson; two sisters, Arlene and Maxine; and five brothers-in-law: Bill, Max, Warren, George, and Lawrence.

A memorial visitation is scheduled on Friday, June 7, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, with military honors by the Otto Chose Post #235 and a final fire call by the Lake Mills Volunteer Fire Department. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
