Russell C. Myli, age 86, died on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at MercyOne Medical Center North Iowa.

Russell was born on May 26, 1933, at home on a farm near Kensett, Iowa. A son of Rudolph and Mabel (Redalen) Myli, he was baptized and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church. He attended school at Brookfield Township #8 through the eighth grade and then, graduated from Kensett High School in 1951. Next, he attended Austin Area Vocational School in Austin, Minnesota. In 1956, he completed trade preparatory training in carpentry.

Russell, then, joined the Army. After completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he was stationed in Korea from 1953 to 1955, working in communications and intelligence. Following his discharge from the Army, Russ spent two years at Mason City Junior College before transferring to Iowa State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business in 1962. Following his graduation, he worked for Hormel Sales through 1963. From 1963 to 1969, he worked as a field man for Grinnell Mutual before becoming an agent with Francis Brinkman in Greene, Iowa, a position which he held from 1969 to 1972. Then, from 1972 to 1984, he worked as an Insurance Agent at the Winnebago Agency in Lake Mills, Iowa. In 1984, he became Manager of Winnebago Mutual, a job he held until he retired on December 31, 2003.

Russ belonged to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War. A member of the Ambulance squad, Salem Lutheran Church, and the Church Council, he, also, served as an usher and communion server. In addition, he contributed his talents to the Board of Property and Management for Salem, the Building Committee for the Narthex, the Lutheran Brotherhood, and the Stewardship Board.

Russell married Suzanne Myli (Clunis) on June 13, 1965. They have two children, Brian Myli and Amy (Troy) Anderson; and a granddaughter, Aleah, all of Las Vegas, Nevada. A devoted man to family, career, friends, and community, Russ loved the outdoors, traveling, and helping at the family farm. Always up for a Norwegian joke, he had a great sense of humor.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sue; his son, Brian Myli, and his daughter, Amy (Troy) Anderson; his granddaughter, Aleah Anderson, all of Las Vegas, Nevada; his sister, Marilyn Myli, of Kensett, Iowa; his brother, Erling (Vada) Myli, also of Kensett, Iowa; his nephew, Joel (Lisa) Myli, of Clinton, Iowa; his great nieces and nephew: Kali, Sara, Lexi, and Bret Myli, all of Clinton, Iowa; his niece, Kari Myli (Richard) Arndt, of Sauk City, Wisconsin; his sister- and brother-in-law, Noel and Pat Severson, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; his nephew, David (Kass) Severson, of Regina, Saskatchewan; his great nephews, Jay and Mathew Severson, also of Regina, Saskatchewan; and his niece, Cindy (Jamie) Enoch, of Spring, Texas; as well as other extended family members and friends. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Mabel (Redalen) Myli; his sister, Ruth Myli, who died in 2006 and a brother, Harlan Myli, who died in 2014.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 6, 2019, at 10:30 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, and for one hour before the services at the church on Thursday. Interment will follow in the Elk Creek Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kensett, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills Ambulance, or the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601, www.alz.org .
