Surrounded by his family and under the care of Albert Lea Mayo Clinic Hospice, Sidney M. Kvale, age 85, of Lake Mills, died at his home on Saturday, May 25, 2019.

Sidney, a son of Selmer and Marie Peterson Kvale, was born on November 21, 1933, at home on a farm south of Scarville. Baptized at the Lutheran parsonage in Scarville and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, Sid received his early education at country school for eight years before transferring to and then graduating from Lake Mills High School in 1951.

After farming with his father for three years, Sid entered the service in February of 1954. After completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he was assigned to the Ninth Infantry Division in Fürth, Germany. He served there until he contracted Rheumatic Fever. After spending three months in hospitals in Germany, he was sent back to Great Lakes Naval Base Hospital for three more months. Then, in February of 1955, he was given a medical discharge.

Sid began farming in 1955. On August 7, 1955, he married Vivian Baker in Forest City, Iowa. Three daughters were born to this union: Kristine, Susan, and Joan. Sid and Vivian farmed together until they retired. During that time, Sidney served on Asbury Church boards, the Lake Mills MBT Bank board, and the Kiester Bank board. In addition, he worked as the county farm assessor and served on the Food Bank board. He was a member of the America Legion Post 235, the VFW Post 6161 (life member), and the DAV (life member).

Sidney is survived by Vivian, his loving wife of sixty-four years; his children: Kristine (Dennis), Susan (Wayne), and Joan (Kent); his grandchildren: Andy, Aaron (Kristin), Mike (Julia), Ben (Ashley), Camille, and Claire; his great-grandchildren: Karson, Kasey, Brynna, Kylee, Hallie, Maddie, Anika, Kennedy, and Baby-to-Be; his step great-grandchildren: Patrick, Morgan, and Aidan; his brother, Stephen (Juli); and his sister, Jean; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and an honorary daughter, Patty Alvine. Sidney is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Marie, and his brother-in-law, Harold.

A big thank you to the Lake Mills Ambulance crew and the good Samaritans who revived Sidney in 2007. A thank you is also due to Dr. Leonard Shelhamer and the Mayo Clinic Hospice for their wonderful care.
