May 1, 1929 - February 27, 2019

Kari Singelstad, age 89, of rural Northwood, died on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.

Kari Singelstad was born on May 1, 1929, in Norway in the rural area of Uggdalseidet on the island of Tysnes to Kristoffer and Nilla (Bekken) Haaheim. Baptized and confirmed at Uggdal Lutheran Church in Uggdal, Norway, she finished her schooling in 1950. Then, she decided to explore America. She traveled the country while working and living in Westfield, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Tacoma, Washington, and Mason City, Iowa.

On September 29, 1956, Kari married Alfred Singelstad at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, Iowa. Subsequently, they farmed and made their home on the Singelstad family farm. There, they raised their four children. Their union lasted for fifty-eight years.

A member of the Silver Lake Lutheran Church for sixty-three years, she taught Sunday school and actively participated in the Naomi Circle and the Ladies Aid Society and with the church quilters. For over 30 years, Kari and Alfred served as the church custodians. Indeed, her Church was the cornerstone of her life.

In addition, Kari belonged to the Sons of Norway Nordic Lodge 1-502 for 39 years. She enjoyed baking, (especially lefse), gardening, reading, dabbling in photography, letter writing and visiting with family, friends, and neighbors. Moreover, she made several return trips to Norway over the years. She, truly, loved her husband Alfred and her entire family, especially her seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Kari is survived by her children: Kermit (Brenda) Singelstad, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Michael (Debra) Singelstad, of Owatonna, Minnesota, Monica (Frank ) Kubesh, of Austin, Minnesota, and Kevin (Robin) Singelstad, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her grandchildren, Kristoffer (Casey) Singelstad, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Chelsea (Michael Will) Singelstad, of Fairmont, Minnesota, Curtis (Chelsea) Singelstad, of Northwood, Iowa, Benjamin Kubesh, of West Hollywood, California, Karla Kubesh, of Ames, Iowa, Anna Singelstad, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Bianca Singelstad, of Lake Mills, Iowa; two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Raegan Singelstad; and her sisters-in-law: Helen DeLooper, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Norma Adams, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Magnhild Vik Haaheim, of Rong, Norway, as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Kari was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, her parents, Kristoffer and Nilla Haaheim; her brother, Johannes Haaheim, her sister, Solveig Haaheim; her brothers-in-law: Charles Flugum, Norman Eide, Norman DeLooper, Curtis Amundson, James Adams, Raymond Singelstad, and Hans Singelstad; her sisters-in-law: Marhta Flugum, Bertha Eide, and Oma Lee Phillips.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 4, 2019, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church, 705 Silver Lake Road, Northwood, Iowa 50459, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in the Silver Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 3, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
