Steven "Steve" Russell Canny
December 22, 1954 - February 28, 2019

Steven R. “Steve” Canny, age 64, of Cherokee, died on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at his home in Cherokee.

Steven Russell Canny was born on December 22, 1954, in Osage, Iowa, to Clair Russell and Janice Sue (Julius) Canny. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Osage, he attended and graduated from Rockford High School in 1973. A long-time high school record holder for the 220- yard dash, he qualified to run in the Iowa State track meet at Drake University in two events. Following graduation, he worked at various manufacturing jobs until his health failed.

On September 11, 1976, Steve married Sheila Rowe in Charles City, Iowa. To their union, a daughter, Shanda, was born. Steve and Sheila, however, would, later, divorce. Then, in time, he met and married Carolyn Hope at Sturgis, South Dakota. They made their home in Cherokee for over twenty years.

Steve enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, doing yard work, and riding his ’79 Harley Davidson lowrider. In addition, for many years, he liked attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Moreover, he appreciated time spent with his family and friends and was currently attending Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Cherokee.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, of Cherokee, Iowa; his daughter, Shanda (Brandon) Zelle, of Waverly, Iowa; four grandchildren, Tre and Kylie Smith and Katelyn and Piper Zelle; his mother, Janice Canny, of St. Ansgar, Iowa; four siblings: Lorie (Roy) Wilson, of Rockford, Iowa, Becky (Joe Stier) Sanford, of Rochester, Minnesota, Mark (Tammy) Canny, of Brownsdale, Minnesota, and Lynn (Deb) Canny, of Lake Mills; and a brother-in-law, Bob (Colleen) Hollatz, of St. Ansgar, Iowa; and a step-daughter, Kara (Tracy) Timmons, and their daughter, Katy, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Clair, in 2000; a sister, Lynette Hollatz, in 1991; and his grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
