Arnold H. Dontje
August 10, 1928 - January 29, 2019

Arnold Herman Dontje, 90, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

He was born on August 10, 1928, in Gerled, Iowa, to Herman and Jennie (Troff) Dontje. Growing up on a farm south of Ledyard, he attended Ledyard High School. Next, he helped his parents on the family farm near Rake.

On February 1, 1949, he married Velma Kardoes in Buffalo Center. Together, they farmed near Rake until 1966 before moving into Buffalo Center. In addition, Arnold worked for Buffalo Center Creamery, built new houses for Nordaas Homes, and worked for the Farmers Co-op Elevator until he retired.

Arnold enjoyed woodworking and watching basketball and football. Moreover, he loved fishing, especially while taking fishing trips with his sons, grandsons, and brothers. Easy going and never angry, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Arnold is survived by Velma Dontje, his wife of almost seventy years of Buffalo Center; his sons, Dennis (Melinda) Dontje, of Mankato, and Steven (Mary) Dontje, of Duluth, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeff) Schmeling, of Littleton, Colorado, Tricia McMillan, of Plymouth, Minnesota, Anna (Eric Robinson) Dontje, of Duluth, Minnesota, Jacob (Libby Polster) Dontje, of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, Eric (Hannah Alvar) Dontje, of Duluth, Minnesota, and Brianna Dontje, of Beaverton, Oregon; and his great-grandchildren: Seth Dickinson, Alexa McMillan, and Ava Dontje; his sisters, Deloris Kettwick, of Buffalo Center, and Janice Van Der Zwaag, of Hospers, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Jennie Dontje; his son, Richie Dontje; and his siblings: John and Donald Dontje and Martha Milsap.

A funeral service will be held for Arnold at 1:30 PM on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. Visitation is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 PM at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center.
