Doris Helen Juhl
March 8, 1926 - January 20, 2019

FOREST CITY – Doris Juhl, 92, formerly of Forest City, died on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, Iowa.

Doris Helen Hall, a daughter of George and Lena (Dietz) Hall, was born on March 8, 1926. She grew up on a farm near Miller where she learned the value of hard work and dedication to family. When Doris was five years old, her father died leaving her mother with six children and a farm to care for. With God’s help and the kindness of relatives and neighbors, they survived. Doris went to school at Ellington #8 in Hancock County, and graduated from Garner High School in 1943 and Waldorf College in 1944. After working at several jobs during the war, she accepted one at Olson Furniture in Forest City. While working there, she met Marvin Juhl, the love of her life. They married in 1947 at the Ellington Prairie Lutheran Church southeast of Miller. They were married for 66 years at the time of his death in 2013, and they, rarely, spoke a cross word between them. They raised four children who proudly claim they are the luckiest children because they were brought up with a love of family and a quest for knowledge and adventure. Annual camping trips took them to every state west of the Mississippi, often in search of a rock or two to add to their vast lapidary collection.

In 1968, Doris went to work at Winnebago Industries in the Accounts Receivable Department. After retiring in 1988, Marvin and Doris continued to travel and work on their rocks. Doris’s creative nature, patience and attention to detail led to many hobbies including sewing, quilting, knitting, and faceting gems.

A long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, Doris is survived by her children; Randy (Renee), of Glenshaw, Pennsylvania, Tom (Stacie), of Bloomfield, Iowa, Marcia (Travis) Brunsvold, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Rick (Ann), of Surprise, Arizona; her grandchildren: Eric (Kelly), Jason (Alison), Katy, Amy (Molly Mann), Jason (Catie), and Derek Juhl; Jesse Brunsvold; Nicole (Brian) Bradley; Stephanie (Jon) Thomas; and Annette (Josh) Fox; eight great grandchildren with two more expected soon; and a sister, Myrtle Yanecek, of Cedar Rapids, as well as by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her parents; and her brothers: Harold, Galen, Merle, and Leonard.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 24, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Zech Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, and will continue for one hour before services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church and/or Heritage Park.
