Gene A. Haugo, 82, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Muse Morris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Gene was on born on July 28, 1936, in Lake Mills, Iowa, to Torjus O. and Marie (Charlson) Haugo. After completing grade school in Lake Mills, he attended and then graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1954. Next, he served his country in the United States Army. On May 31, 1959, he married Bev J. Johnson at the First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

A lifelong farmer, Gene loved and respected the land. An avid pilot, he enjoyed flying. In addition, he liked playing volleyball and golf as well as hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and watching all sports. Most of all, however, he loved each member of his family equally.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Bev Haugo, of Lake Mills; his daughters, Deb (Gary) Hanson, of Northwood, Iowa, and Kris (Jeff) Nielsen, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his son, Jon (Pam) Haugo, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his grandchildren: Kalli (Mike) Fitzgerald; Joey (Mindy), Levi (Vanessa), and Dane (Cristin) Hanson; Josh (Rachel) and Cody Haugo; and Drew and Trevor Heitland; his great-grandchildren: Blake and Dylan Fitzgerald; Ava, Camden, Corbyn, Elynn, and Jaxon Hanson; and Joren and Jens Haugo; his sister, Barbara Best, of Garner, Iowa; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, JoAnn (Vern) Orth and Wayne (Judy) Johnson; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Jerry Hanson; his brother-in-law, Robert Best; and his nephew, Joe Best.

A special Thank You goes to Michelle Kingland and the staff of Hospice of North Iowa for their excellent care.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Sion Lutheran Church, 4527 Finch Avenue, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, with Kermit Singelstad officiating. Gene’s family will greet friends at the church for one hour (10:00 to 11:00 AM) before the service. Military rites will be observed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401, or to Sion Lutheran Church, 4527 Finch Avenue, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450.
