Ronald "Rod" LeRoy Hanson
October 30, 1938 - December 27, 2018Ronald “Rod” LeRoy Hanson, 80, of Forest City, died peacefully on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, Iowa, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Rod was born on the family farm north of Miller, Iowa, on October 30, 1938. The second oldest, he grew up in a large family with four brothers and many cousins. In 1957, he graduated from Forest City High School as a star athlete. All conference in football, he ran track as well and was crowned the North Iowa Skating King in 1959. Next, he enlisted in the US Army Reserves and then enrolled in an automotive trade school in Omaha, Nebraska.
On May 12, 1962, he married, Donna (Teigen) of Lake Mills at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, Iowa. They, subsequently, had two beautiful daughters, Tammy (Ron) Schafer and Paula Vaughan, both of Forest City. He was employed by Massey-Ferguson in Clarion, Iowa, and then at Garner, Iowa, where he worked as a mechanic. Starting in 1971, he transitioned to the Iowa DOT first out of Forest City and then out of Hanlontown until he retired in 2003. Continuously active, Rod worked at Weiland Farms in Garner for fifty years during each harvest and helped when he could. To get away from the cold, he enjoyed wintering in Texas.
Rod loved dancing, skating, listening to old country music, and spending time with his many friends and family members. Active in each of his grandchildren’s lives, he would attend their extracurricular events and always find a friendly face to strike up a conversation with.
Rod is preceded into death by his parents, Florence and Ernest; his brother, Gene; his nephew, Todd; and his beloved wife, Donna. He is survived by his brothers: Arlo, Carroll, and Joel; his daughters, Tammy and Paula; his grandsons: Steven, Randy (Paula), and Dylan (Tammy), and his granddaughter, Hannah (Paula), all of Forest City and his special friend, Margaret Hall, and her family of Mason City as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and loved ones.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the overwhelming support of the community during this time and know that many will miss him.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, Iowa, located at 1985 290th Street, Garner, Iowa 50438, with Lay Minister Rose Visser officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa. Burial will follow in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church in Miller.
