April 28, 1929 - December 27, 2018Emil J. Damm, 89, of Forest City, died peacefully on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.
Emil Junior was born on April 28, 1929, to Emil, Senior, and Mary (Madsen) Damm in Crystal Lake, Iowa. He died on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at age 89. Having attended Crystal Lake schools, he graduated in 1946. He attended college in Evanston, Illinois, before moving to Forest City where he worked at Bowen’s Food Center. There he met the love of his life, Viola Caltvedt. The two married on January 7, 1951, at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Leland. Soon after, he entered the United States Army and was stationed at Camp Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Discharged in 1953, Emil returned to Bowen’s where he worked as the produce manager until 1967 when he became the State Farm Insurance agent for Forest City. Viola worked part-time as his secretary. He retired in 1992 after 25 years with State Farm. Emil and Viola enjoyed traveling and took several trips together including to Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Vienna, Hawaii, Denmark, and Norway.
An active member of the community, Emil joined the Forest City Jaycees, the Evening Lions Club, the Kum Along Club, and the American Legion Post 121. He, also, served on the Forest City Golf Club Board. His hobbies included golfing, bowling, fishing, and playing bridge. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1953, he served as an usher for many years and taught Sunday School. All who knew him will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his four children: David, and his wife, Sandy, and their children: son, Joshua, and wife, Misty, and daughter, Jessica, and her husband, Chase Dickinson; daughter, Linda, and her husband, Michael Smith, and their children: daughter, Megan, and husband, Phil Porter, and their children, Isaac and Hayden, and son, Matthew Smith; son, Michael Damm, and his friend, Susan Wiley, and his sons, Nicholas and Nathan; son, Steven Damm, and ex-daughter-in-law, Julie Damm; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Caltvedt; his niece, Darlene, and her husband, Dwight DoBell; his nephew, Calvin Caltvedt; his great-niece, Amanda, and her husband, Dean, and their daughter, Lucy.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 246 South Clark Street, Forest City, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, January 4, 2019, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa 50436. Burial will take place in Madison Township Cemetery, rural Forest City. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes gifts to be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; his parents, Emil and Mary; his mother-in-law, Mae Caltvedt; his father-in-law, Carl Caltvedt; his sister, Eva Damm; his brother-in-law, Clifford Caltvedt; his niece, Betty Caltvedt; and his nephew, Daryl Caltvedt.
