April 17, 1930 - November 24, 2018Ruth Elaine Hylland, 88, of Scarville, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at her home in rural Scarville.
The youngest child of Edvin and Rose (Flugum) Jacobson, Ruth Elaine Hylland was born on April 17, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, she graduated from Thompson high school.
On November 20, 1948, Ruth married Paul Andrew Hylland in Scarville, Iowa. They belonged to the Center Evangelical Lutheran Synod Church since their wedding. On October 5, 1949, they welcomed a son, Charles Edward. They lived on Paul’s parents’ farm until 1955 when they purchased a farm west of Scarville, Iowa. There, they remained for the rest of their years. Ruth, for her part, worked at Deluxe in Lake Mills, Iowa, and helped out on the farm.
After retiring Ruth spent many years traveling near and far with Paul, collecting plates as souvenirs from each state they visited. They, also, retained a vacation spot in Mission, Texas, for many years so they could avoid Iowa’s frigid winters. Ruth loved visiting with all of their friends and spending many hours playing cards and bingo with them.
Family meant the world to Ruth; especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She saved every picture, letter and drawing throughout the years and cherished the time she spent with them. An avid gardener, Ruth appreciated polka music and enjoyed cooking large meals and doting on her loved ones. She, also, appreciated the companionship of her dog, Tiko, who followed her everywhere.
Ruth is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kathy (Bausch) Hylland, of Scarville, Iowa; three grandchildren: Amber, and her husband, Stephen Fry, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Stacy, and her husband, Jonathan Salyers, of Glenwood, Iowa, and Paul Nels Hylland, of Lake Mills, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Natalie, Allison, and Heidi Salyers, of Glenwood, Iowa; and a sister, Mavis Klein, of Iowa Falls, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
