June 26, 1945 - October 8, 2018Surrounded by her family while under the care of Hospice of North Iowa, Sandra Kathleen Olson, 73, of Lake Mills, Iowa, passed away at her home on Monday, October 08, 2018. She fought off cancer twice before, but this time she could not. Fortunately, she was able to visit with many of her dearest friends and family members in her final days.
The youngest of five children, Sandra was born on June 26, 1945, to Selmer and Katherine (Click) Folven in Buffalo Center Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Thompson, Iowa, she attended Lake Mills Community School, graduating in 1963. Sandra met Harlan Olson in Crystal Lake. They married on November 3, 1963, at a Lutheran Church in Northwood, Iowa. Making their home in Lake Mills, they raised two beautiful daughters.
Sandra’s love of children extended to babysitting neighborhood children in addition to raising her own girls. While living west of Lake Mills, she worked at the Tavern in Scarville for her dad while helping Harlan out on the farm. She would, often, go to the sale barn and bring calves home in the backseat of her car! After the family moved to Lake Mills, she began working at the Lake Mills Care Center as a cook. Many of the residents and staff regarded her as their “favorite” cook. Friends and neighbors will, also, recall her time as a co-manager at the Corner Stop in the pizza department where she did bookwork.
Sandra enjoyed gardening, fishing, bowling, horseback riding, knitting, crocheting, and playing cards and Bunco. A very talented seamstress, knitter, and crocheter, she could make anything with or without a pattern. An accomplished baker and cook, she enjoyed sharing her talents by teaching other her skills. Nonetheless, she, most, treasured the time she spent with her family.
Sandra is survived by Harlan, her husband of nearly fifty-five years; her daughters, Holly (Tim) Corrigan, of Twin Bridges, Montana, and Jodi (Darin) Ruud, of Lakeville, Minnesota; her grandchildren: Trevor Willert, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Katie and Jacob Corrigan, of Dillan, Montana, Benjamin Corrigan, of Twin Bridges, Montana, and Erika Corrigan, of Butte, Montana; and her brother, David Folven, of Erie, Colorado; as well as by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Selmer and Katherine Folven; her brothers, Mason and Merlin Folven, and her sister, Patricia (Folven) Tenold, and her father- and mother-in-law, Elmer and Beulah (Jacobson) Olson.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM, Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Salem Lutheran Church, 401 South Lake Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, with Pastor Joel L. Guttormson officiating. Sandra’s family will meet and greet friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM, Friday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again for one before the service. Inurnment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Thompson, Iowa, at a later date. The family would like to suggest that memorial be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401.
