Marvin Kenneth Flugum
December 2, 1923 - June 22, 2018

Marvin Kenneth Flugum, 94, went to his final home in Heaven and into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus, on Friday, June 22, 2018.

Marvin was born to “Ed” Neils E. and Andrina J. (Holstad) Flugum on December 2, 1923. He began his education at a country school north-west of Leland where he learned English. As an adolescent, he attended school in Leland until about the ninth grade. He wanted to go on with high school, but because of his father’s sudden passing, he had to help his mom and siblings with the family farm. He had a strong work ethic learned from a young age. Along with his other siblings, he worked extremely hard helping his mom with the many chores at home so that they could keep the farm that his father had purchased only a few years before his passing.

Marvin met the love of his life, Deon Stewart, at the popcorn stand in Lake Mills. Indeed, he fell head over heels for Deon the moment he first set eyes on her, a girl of 15. After patiently waiting for her to turn 18, he proposed. They married on May 20, 1945, and their wonderful partnership of over seventy years began. To their union, a little white-haired daughter, Laurel, was born in November of 1947. Almost three years later, they were blessed with a son, Greg, in June of 1950. Then, they waited nearly another seven years before their last child, Nancy, was born in January of 1957. Regrettably, Marvin lost his lovely wife on August 1, 2015.

At age 17, Marvin decided to enlist in the Navy since he would have to serve for only a year and the US is not at war. Stationed on the unfortunate USS Arizona, he was discharged from the Navy just one week before the attack on Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona was sunk with his 3000 shipmates. Thereupon, he enlisted, along with his brother Elmer, in the Coast Guard Merchant Marine where he served from about 1943 through 1945 when World War II ended. To his credit, he was able to save enough of his military pay for a down payment on a farm two miles east of Scarville, Iowa. There, he and Deon began their arduous but rewarding life farming.

Marvin and Deon, though very dedicated to farming and fulfilling their duties to their church, had many relaxing outside interests as well. They, for instance, liked to go motorcycling, boating, skiing, fishing, hunting, gardening, and taking many, many trips across the US including a few trips to Alaska and Hawaii.

After injuring his back in 1984, Marvin decided to retire from farming full time. They had, already, left the farm to move into Emmons, Minnesota, about ten years earlier. Now, he and Deon began to travel even more wintering in south Texas for many years. From their southern home, they traveled to Mexico many times as well as to surrounding states. In addition, they took a few cruises to exotic places. Once the temperatures neared 100 degrees down there, however, they would rush back up north to enjoy the beauty of the Iowa/Minnesota summer and fall. Marvin loved to garden just to keep his “fingers dirty” after retiring from farming. Moreover, he continued to garden right through his last year. Lastly, Marvin loved to visit with people, one of the joys he experienced while selling produce from his garden at the Farmers’ Market.

Marvin is survived by his three children: Laurel Yost, Greg (Sherry) Flugum, and Nancy Rainer; his sister, Arlene (Roger) Roberts; his grandchildren: Anne Dawley; Beth (John) LeDonne; Benjamin (Alana) and Jason (Samantha) Flugum; Heather (Seth Buck) and Justin (Miho) Gerdes; April (Josh Stevens) Caleb, Lucas (Hannah Steblay), and Rebekah (Charles Grant) Sorbo; and Brian (Nicole), Christopher (Dixie), Douglas (Heather), and Stephanie Yost; many great grandchildren; and a few great-great grandchildren; as well as by several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and other loved ones.

Those preceding Marvin in death include his parents; his wife, Deon; his brothers: Elmer, Duane, and Wayne; his sisters: Myrtle (Robert) Witham, Agnes (Johnny) Furiosi, and Lenore (Bud) Wilson; and three great grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, 2-018, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the Emmons Lutheran Church, 490 Pearl Street, Emmons, Minnesota 56029. Interment will follow the service at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills, Iowa. He will be placed alongside his beloved wife, Deon, who went on ahead in 2015 to help our Lord prepare a fishing hole and a garden for him. Emmons Louis/Tveite American Legion Post #317 will provide military honors.
