Dean C. Mechem
May 22, 1934 - May 19, 2018Dean C. Mechem, 83, passed away peacefully at the Hospice of North Iowa Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
A son of Clark and Lela (VanWert) Mechem, Dean was born on May 22, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Thompson, Iowa, where, as a young entrepreneur, he started Thompson’s first garbage pickup service.
In September of 1975, Dean married Elsie (Nesset), of Thompson, Iowa. They farmed north of Thompson as Dean followed his true passion. He loved radioing in to Elsie, endearingly calling her Pink Lady while she referred to him as Red Dog. He loved being out and about on his Farmall tractor, but more importantly, he loved fixing it and all other items that needed his touch. After retiring from farming, Elsie and Dean delivered Winnebago Motorhomes across the country, indulging in their love of travel.
Eventually, they found a home in Sun City, Arizona, where they spent their winters. A family man, Dean enjoyed sharing life with his kin. He would, for example, as the official taste tester, help Elsie with providing meals for the Lakeview United Methodist Church. In addition, he enjoyed aqua jogging, playing pool with his grandkids, and taking all visitors to play mini golf, a game which he would always win.
He is survived by daughters, Kathy (Johnny), of Thompson, and Patti (Steve), of Forest City; his grandchildren: James (Andrea), Randall (Sarah), William, and Emma; and his great-grandchildren: Ally, Owen, and Evelyn. Dean is preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mechem; his son, Erick Hanson; his parents, Clark and Lela Mechem; and his son-in-law, Greg Remington.
Upon his wishes, his body was donated for scientific purposes and cremation will follow. Interment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson at a later date.
