Mary Allison Carlson
December 10, 1946 - March 21, 2018Mary A. Carlson, 71, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Mary Allison Carlson, a daughter of Francis and Elene (Raak) Alstott, of Laurens, Iowa, was born on December 10, 1946. While growing up in the Laurens Community School District, she participated in music, sports, and speech. At the same time, she took part in 4-H activities and supported that organization and its youth throughout her life.
Recognized as the Outstanding Business Student when she graduated from Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska, with a degree in Business Education, Mary moved to Lake Mills, Iowa, to pursue her career as a business teacher. She taught for thirty-six years at the Lake Mills Community School and liked working with the students. She believed in and demonstrated a superior work ethic. Often, she would ask her students, “What did you learn today?” expecting them to respond with some evidence of growth, or she would remind her students that when they turned in their work, they were saying this is the best I can do. She, always, wanted to know. “Did you do your best?” Did you take time to prepare and turn in your best?” Mary, constantly, promoted learning as a lifelong process involving effective communication, responsible citizenship, and critical/creative thinking while making healthy contributions to the community. In 2008, she became the first recipient of the Lake Mills Friends of the School award.
On June 13, 1970, Mary married John Carlson of Lake Mills, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with a son, Larry. Mary, then, used her leisure time for gardening, reading, listening to music, and traveling. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her family and friends. She became an active member of the Church of Christ; the Daughters of the American Revolution, which preserves history, promotes patriotism, and supports education; the Order of the Eastern Star, which endeavors to support the spirit of fraternal love and a desire to work together for the common good; the Lake Mills Area Historical Society; and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, which honors women educators and promotes education and the teaching profession.
Mary is survived by her husband, John, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her son, Larry (April) Carlson, and their two children, Simon and Sophia, all of Van Horne, Iowa; her sisters, Judy (Craig) Brent, of Kansas, and Gail (Allen) Hartman, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and her brother, David (Carolyn) Alstott, of Laurens, Iowa; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
A Memorial Celebration service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 25, 2018, at the Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Avenue, Fertile, Iowa 50434, with Pastor Rob Perry officiating. Mary’s family will meet and greet friends at the church during the hour before the service on Sunday. Inurnment will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa, at a later date.
