Lawrence "Larry" W. Pinneke
May 8, 1932 - February 24, 2018Lawrence “Larry” W. Pinneke, 85, of Garner, died on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Lawrence William Pinneke, a son of William and Rose (Behm) Pinneke, was born on May 8, 1932, on a farm near Manly. He grew up on an acreage outside Sheffield and at the age of nine moved with his family to Mason City where he attended school. Larry joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1956. While attending a country western dance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, he met Merna Hansen, his future wife. They married on October 28, 1956, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. To their union, three children were born, Jim, Mike and Julie. They, subsequently, made their home on a farm west of Miller for fifty-eight years where they raised their family and farmed. In 1997, Larry retired from farming and then worked as a substitute custodian at the Forest City Community School District for the next fifteen years. In 2013, he and Merna moved into Garner. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop, going to garage sales, and spending time with his grandkids.
A member of the Forest City United Methodist Church, Larry served on the administrative council. In addition, he served on the Garner Creamery Board, the Farmer’s Cooperative Elevator Board, the Farm Bureau Board, and with the Miller Telephone Company.
Larry is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Merna, of Garner; his daughter, Julie (Todd) Jass and his daughter-in-law, Rhonda (Ken) Krause, both of Garner; his grandchildren: Christine (DJ) Topping, Anna Pinneke, Lisa (Josh) Crawford, and Greg (Gwen) Jass; four great grandchildren: Nolan and Cooper Topping, Coy Crawford, and Gabby Jass; a brother, Robert (Dee) Pinneke, of St. Ansgar; and a sister, Marion Fuller, of Warren, Oregon; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Mike and Jim Pinneke; two grandsons, Nick Pinneke and Timothy Jim Hall; his sisters, Ardy Carolus, Vi Stricker, and Betty Hardman; his brothers: Glen, Vern, Stan, and Ted Pinneke; and a brother-in-law, Duane Reese.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, March 1, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Rev. Les Green officiating. Burial will follow at the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th Street, Garner, and will continue for one hour before services at the church.
