June 20, 1915 - February 3, 2018

Agnes K. Maakestad, 102, of Leland, died peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Agnes was born on a farm southwest of Lake Mills, Iowa, on the 20th of June, 1915, to Oscar and Marie (Johnson) Dahlen.

Baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, she attended Lake Mills Schools. After graduating, she married Omer Maakestad. Subsequently, they made their home in Leland, Iowa, where she lived in that same house for sixty-five years. She had one daughter, Joan Elizabeth, born July 9th, 1935. A wonderful cook and baker, she baked almost every day and shared her baked goods with others, especially with her grandchildren. Indeed, to her credit, she worked tirelessly to establish the hot lunch program for the Leland and Forest City schools. Otherwise, she worked at various jobs throughout her life.

Agnes attended Our Saviors Lutheran Church for many years, serving in various capacities. She loved her church and doing her “church-work,” as she called it. Moreover, she participated in many community activities and took great joy in serving others. Her family and friends treasured her positive attitude. Indeed, her strong and consistent faith in God became an inspiration and source of strength for her many family members, and her example of Christ’s love was evident throughout her life.

Agnes entered the Good Samaritan Center of Forest City in 2008. She loved and was loved back by many caring staff over the years there and was known for always seeing the ‘sunny side of life. She passed away at the Forest City Good Samaritan Center at the age of 102 on February 3, 2018.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan; her eight grandchildren, Diane (Jerry) Charlson, Danny (Ann) Finer, Debra (Les) Remmers, Dori (Duane) Finch, Dawn Margro, Denise (Scott) Bauer, Daris (Rhonda) Finer, and Darcy (Jay) Swearingen; as well as by almost fifty great and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Omer; her parents; and her five siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland with Lay Minister Rose Visser officiating. Visitation will take place during the hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Burial will in Forest Home Cemetery, Leland, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland.
