Baptized and confirmed at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, Iowa, she, also, attended country school in rural Lake Mills and then Lake Mills High School, graduating in 1941 as salutatorian of her class. Later, she enrolled at Waldorf College where she earned an Associate’s Degree and a Teaching Certificate.

Ruth taught for one year in Hartley, Iowa, and then returned to Lake Mills where she taught sixth grade for three years. On January 12, 1950, she married Alfred "Al" Disrud at Sion Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. In July of 1950, they moved to Monroe, Iowa, where they purchased the Monroe Mirror Newspaper with their partners Warren & Alice Burman. In 1957, the family moved to Forest City, and Ruth worked part-time at Waldorf College in the offices of the Dean of Students and the Chaplain. Their last move, to Waverly, came in 1966. There, she supported Al with his work, managed their home, and cared for their sons, John and Dan. Ruth lived in her own home in Waverly until July 2009 when she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

A member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waverly and active early in her life with Sion Lutheran Church, Ruth taught Sunday School and Bible School, played the church organ, and directed the choir when she was not singing. Moreover, she played for countless weddings, funerals, and other events. A charter member of the ML P.E.O. in Waverly, she, also, served in various positions in that organization. She truly loved her time spent teaching and assisting teachers to gain experience. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing and listening to music, sewing, reading, and playing games.
