Barbara Kay Abbott-Peterson

Barbara, a daughter of John and Clara (Azeltine) Hardcastle, was born October 6, 1936, in Cushing, Iowa. She attended school in Eagle Grove, graduating in 1954. Next, she attended junior college before enrolling at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned a teaching degree. She taught at various small towns before settling in Forest City in 1967.

On June 10, 1956, she married James Abbott, Jr., at the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church. Subsequently, four children were born to their union: James, Brant, Phillip and Ann. While raising her children, Barbara remained active in the Forest City Schools and Eastern Star.

Following the death of her husband, James, on January 10, 1988, Barbara moved back to Eagle Grove and taught school in Webster City. On April 23,1992, she married Harold “Pete” Peterson at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2008, she moved back to Forest City, residing first at Forest Plaza Assisted Living and then at the Country Meadow Place in Mason City.

Barbara enjoyed listening to music, traveling, and spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. She will be, dearly, missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her four children: Jay (Cynthia-Kyff) Abbott, of Coram, New York, and Brant (Kim Dodd) Abbott, Phillip Abbott, and Ann (Danny) Finer, all of Forest City; her grandchildren: Korey, Tara, and Troy Abbott and Tyler Finer; her step-granddaughter, Paige Dodd; her great-granddaughter, Brianna Jacobsen; and her step great-granddaughter, Daesha Dodd; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Abbott, of Mesa, Arizona, and Shirley Hardcastle, of Fort Dodge; as well as by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Abbott, Jr., and her second husband, Harold “Pete” Peterson; her brother, Jack Hardcastle, and her brother-in-law, Phil Abbott.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 22, 2017, at the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church, 421 West Broadway, Eagle Grove, Iowa 50533, with Pastor Michael Slininger of Faith United Methodist Church in Webster City officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa, and will continue for one hour before the services on Thursday at the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association either in Barbara’s name or in care of the family.
