Joel Douglas Johnson
November 21, 1945 - April 16, 2017Joel Douglas Johnson, 71, of Fertile, died peacefully on Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Joel, a son of Adolph and Silence (Stokke) Johnson, was born on November 21, 1945, in Fertile, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at the Church of Christ in Fertile, Joel attended school in Fertile and graduated from Forest City High School in 1963. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1964, he served in the Vietnam War. Honorably discharged in 1966 and very proud of his service to his country, he returned home to Fertile. On July 12, 1975, he married Jane Zobel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
For many years, Joel worked for Larson Plumbing and Heating in Fertile. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting. Joel also took enormous pride in helping place American Flags on veteran monuments in many local cemeteries every year over Memorial Day. Moreover, he loved spending time with his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Joel is survived by his wife, Jane Johnson, of Fertile; his children, Corey Castler, Joely (Richard) Bruns, and Jasen and Justine Johnson; eight grandchildren; his brother, Jerry (Jana) Johnson; his sister, Gwen Scott; and his aunt, Harriet Winden; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law.
According to his wishes, his remains were cremated and private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will follow in the Grant Center Cemetery, rural Fertile, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the Fertile Church of Christ.
