June Pearl (Barber) Hazelhoff was born on June 15, 1923, near Ruthven, Iowa, to Floyd and Lillian Pearl (Webster) Barber. She attended and graduated from high school in Peterson, Iowa. She, then, enrolled at Tobinl Business College in Fort Dodge where she received training and took classes to become a secretary.

Albert Darrell Hazelhoff was born on December 17, 1930, in Lakeview, Iowa, to Albert and Tena (Auen) Hazelhoff. He graduated from Lakeview High School and attended Buena Vista University where he earned a B.A. degree in education. Darrell served in the United States Army from January of 1952 until December of 1953 during the Korean Conflict.

June and Darrell met while he was teaching and she was working as a school board secretary/librarian at the Marathon school. They married on December 30, 1961, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Subsequently, they lived in Thompson, Iowa, where Darrell taught Social Studies and driver education and coached various sports at the high school. Taking a year off from teaching, Darrell, next, earned a Master’s Degree from NE Missouri State. Then, they moved to the AR-WE-Virginia school district for several years where Darrell became the principal and June his secretary. In the mid-1970s, they moved to Lake City, Iowa, where Darrell served as high school principal until he retired. Both Darrell and June became integral parts of the Lake City Public School system and Darrell a well-respected principal. They remained in Lake City until last fall when they moved closer to their daughter, Cheryl.

An accomplished seamstress, June made many beautiful clothing items and enjoyed crocheting in her spare time. She had, also, worked for the IRS helping others fill out their tax forms, and throughout the years, she took great pride in preparing their personal income tax returns. A proud wife, mother, and grandmother, June paid meticulous attention to every detail of her day to day living. For his part, Darrell loved to spend his time fishing at Fox Lake, Minnesota, where the family had a cottage for many years. He will be remembered for his gentleness and patience with children and his compassion for the elderly.

June and Darrell are survived by their daughter, Cheryl (Phil) Benn, of Rake, Iowa; two grandchildren, Sherry (Randy) Vrieze, of Thompson, Iowa, and Josh “Bender” Benn, of Rake, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Spencer (Brenda) Vrieze and their children Nathan and Brandon; McKenzie (fiancé Jeff Stevenson) Vrieze; and Alexa Vrieze; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
