Wallace Charles Cox, 88, formerly of Leland, Iowa, Pharr, Texas, and Atascocita, Texas, died on February 5, 2017, at Memorial Herman Hospital, Humble, Texas.

Wallace Charles Cox, was born on January 24, 1929, on an Iowa farm to Charles Henry and Mabel (Olson) Cox. Baptized on April 21, 1929, at North Prairie Church and confirmed in 1943 at Center Synod Church, he graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1947. From January 28, 1949, to February 2, 1950, he served in the army during the Korean Conflict and then in the army in the active reserves until 1953.

Wallace married Elaine Schott on September 24, 1950, at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minnesota. He started farming in 1952 in Leland, Iowa. Then, he served as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service out of Leland, Iowa, from 1966 to 1986 and out of Kensett, Iowa, from 1986 to 1989 when he retired. He held township offices of chairman and vice chairman in Winnebago County. A member of the district Rural Carriers Association, the A.S.C.S., and the N. F. O., he, also, held several offices in the Scarville Lutheran Church and on the Worship Committee in Pharr, Texas. A life member of the Disabled Veterans and the American Legion, he volunteered at the Rio Grande Hospital in McAllen, Texas, for fifteen years. He loved square dancing, golfing, playing cards, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Virgil, Clifford, and Kenneth; one sister, Vivian; one son-in-law, Doug Sampson; two sisters-in-law, Jean and Mavis; and two brothers-in-law, Harold and Cecil.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; a son, Jack (Barb) Cox; a daughter, Pauline Sampson, five grandchildren: Candy (Jim) Olsen, Cory (Tracy) Cox, Jason Sampson, Melissa (Quentin) Leigh, and Kyle (Elizabeth) Sampson; nine great grandchildren: Cassidy, Cody, and Faith Cox; Eva, Jordon, and Sophia Leigh; Andrew and Michael Olsen; and Aiden Sampson; and two sisters, Dorothy Olson and Georgia (Wayne) Andersen; as well as by many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, February 12, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 105 E 3rd Street, Scarville, Iowa 50473, with interment following the service at the Center Synod Cemetery, rural Leland, Iowa. The Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235 will conduct the military honors. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Saturday, February 11, 2017, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, 50450. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Haven International, 400 East Minnesota Road, Pharr, Texas 78577, or to the Alzheimer Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, 17th Floor, Chicago, Illinois, 60601-7633.
