Carl Hacker
March 08, 1927 - November 08, 2014

Carl Hacker, 87, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, formerly of rural Emmons, Minnesota, died on Saturday, November 08, 2014, at Oak Park Place in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

A son of Max and Mable (Johnson) Hacker, Carl was born on March 8, 1927, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Baptized in Eagle Grove and confirmed in his faith at the Lime Creek Lutheran Church, rural Emmons, he graduated from Emmons High School. On October 2, 1948, he married Elsie Benson at Zion Lutheran Church in Mansfield Township. They lived on the same farm within sight of his childhood home in rural Emmons for sixty-six years. He and Elsie became the proud parents of five children.

An active member of the Emmons, Twin Lakes, and Albert Lea Senior Citizens groups, Carl held many offices. In addition, he served on the Mansfield Township board for eighteen years. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, traveling, and watching Jeopardy as he would always get the most correct answers. Moreover, he played dart ball for both the Lime Creek and the Mansfield Church teams.

A farmer, carpenter, and handyman, Carl shared his love of farming with his eleven great-grandchildren, treating them to tractor rides, showing them how to dig potatoes, and encouraging them to help with his pet chickens. Indeed, he treasured spending time with his family especially when they all gathered to fill the house to overflowing. Over the years, they shared many cups of coffee and card games.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Elsie, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; his children, Virginia (Robert) Neisen, of Mahnomen, Minnesota, Karen Greenfield, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Sue McInnes, of Stewartville, Minnesota, Richard Hacker, of Byron, Minnesota, and Bennett (Renée) Hacker, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey (Lisa) Neisen, Laura (Shane) Clark, Dyon (Wendy) Greenfield, Linnea (Mike) Petersen, Billy (Desi) Hacker, Donald McInnes, and Nathanial (Naomi) Hacker; eleven great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emily Clark; Ethan and Kate Greenfield; Riley and Ali-Jean Petersen; Anthony, Kayla, and Samantha Hacker; and Belle and Thomas Huntley; and several brothers and sisters as well as brothers- and sisters-in-law: Eldon and Lois Benson; Gordon (Jeanne), Raymond (Marlys), and Robert Hacker; Arlene Levine; and Edythe Thompson; along with special cousins, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters and brothers- and sisters-in-law: Gordon and Vernon Benson; Albert (Helen), Andrew (Darlene), Frank (Bette), and Mary Hacker; Maxine (Lester) Helland; Myrtle (Morris) Spires; and Duane Thompson.

Carl's family would like to send a special thank you to the Oak Park Place and Crossroads Hospice staff for their caring support.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 12, 2014, at the Mansfield Lutheran Church, rural Alden, Minnesota, with Pastor Donald Rose officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Tuesday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will take place at Lime Creek (Stateline) Cemetery, rural Emmons, Minnesota. The family would welcome memorials in Carl’s name to the Mayo Crossroads Hospice and the Mansfield Church Stained Glass Fund.
