Sylvia Lois Van Werden
March 26, 1936 - October 7, 2016

Sylvia Lois Van Werden left this world peacefully on Friday morning, October 7, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born into this world on March 26, 1936, to Carl and Sophia (Hill) Bartleson.

A 1954 graduate of Forest City High School and a 1958 graduate of Broadlawns Polk County Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa, she worked as a skilled and caring Registered Nurse at Lincoln General Hospital for thirty-two years. A loving great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and mother-in-law, she spent many summers with her family at Leech Lake in Minnesota. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and together, she and Bill had many memorable experiences with them in Minnesota each summer. She spent countless hours taking her grandchildren to various events and spending time with them. In addition, her beloved Chihuahuas, Ellie and Ernie, brought her much joy in her final days. A friend to all, she was, always, giving anyone and everyone the benefit of the doubt. She didn’t have an enemy in the world. The epitome of a thoughtful and loving mother-in-law to Roger, Jill, and Diane, she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Sylvia is survived by her son, Charles (Jill) Van Werden, and her grandchildren, Tyler and Alyssa, of Petoskey, Michigan; her daughter, Laura (Roger) Hughes, and her granddaughter, Maddison, of DeLand, Florida; and her son, Paul (Diane) Van Werden, her grandchildren Kyle (Sandra), Nathan, and Emily, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and her great grandchildren, Samantha and Jordan; her sisters, Carol Bartleson, Vivian McAdams, and Judy (Dave) Bengston; and her brothers, Hanford (Dolores) and Tom (Sue) Bartleson; her in-laws, Lawrence (Dottie) Van Werden, James (Sue) Van Werden, and Gretchen (Nelson) Otto; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Louis Van Werden, on December 26, 2007; her parents, Carl and Sophia; her brothers, Bob and Arlo Bartleson; her sister, Helen Wiederanders; and her brother-in-law, Fred McAdams.

Cremation. No visitation. Memorial service will be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Capitol Humane Society of Lincoln, Nebraska.
