Alfred Henry Mayland
April 19, 1927 - November 23, 2016

A son of Henry and Augusta (Barenthin) Mayland, Alfred Mayland was born on April 19, 1927, in Titonka. He attended school through the eighth grade and then began his lifelong farming career.

Alfred enlisted in the Marines. Stationed in Inyokern and China Lake as a Military Police Officer, he, also, served on the rescue and recovery team.

On February 15, 1950, he married Donna Swearingen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The two of them moved near Armstrong to farm with his father. Subsequently, he and Donna lived in several communities including Dell, Minnesota, Elmore, Minnesota, Rake, Iowa, and Thompson, Iowa, before eventually moving back to Rake to retire. They, also, delivered motor homes for Winnebago all over the United States.

A man of many trades, he was not afraid to tackle anything. Besides farming, he worked for Kossuth ASCS, had a trucking and corn shelling business, bought the gas station in Rake, did custom harvesting, and worked at the Elevator in Rake in the spring and fall while “retired.”

Alfred had so much love for his wife and family. He had a calm demeanor and was known by some as the Gentle Giant. He always said “Don’t ever mistake kindness for weakness.”

Alfred died on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center. He was 89. He is survived by his son, Doug (Irene) Mayland, of Estherville; his grandchildren: Jordan (Lindsay) Mayland, of Des Moines, Holly (Ryan) Ruter, of Clear Lake, and Maria Mayland, of Buffalo Center; his step-grandchildren, Ryan and Brandon McMurtry, both of Estherville, and Matthew McMurtry, of Buffalo Center; his great-grandchildren, Bently and Kora Ruter; his step-great-grandchild, Abigail McMurtry, of Estherville; his brothers-in-law: James (Bonnie) Swearingen, of Emmons, Minnesota, Dan (Kathy) Swearingen, of Thompson, and Bill (Diane) Swearingen, also of Thompson; and his sisters-in-law, Sharon (Jamie) Lamb, of Scarville, and Lavonne Swearingen, of Kiester, Minnesota; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Donna; his sisters, Clara Bishop and Marian Torgerson; his brother, Wilbur Mayland, and his brother-in-law, Dennis Swearingen.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, November 28, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.
