July 20, 1920 - December 08, 2016Rhoda S. (Swenson) Brue, 96, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Rhoda Sylvia Brue was born to Gilbert and Ellen Swenson on July 20, 1920, on a farm in Winnebago County near Leland, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, she attended country school in rural Winnebago County and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1938. Next, she attended Iowa State Teachers College for two summers and taught country school near Lake Mills.
On August 20, 1944, Rhoda married Charles Brue at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa. Subsequently, two children, Ellen and David, were born to them. She was employed at the Lake Mills Care Center and at Graphic Publishing.
An active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Rhoda taught Sunday school and participated in the Altar Guild, Circle, and WELCA. In addition, she became a volunteer teacher for the second grade at the Lake Mills Elementary School.
Rhoda loved outdoor gardening and raising African violets, of which she had many. In addition, she liked cooking, baking, reading, hosting family gatherings, and CLEANING!
Survivors include her two children: Ellen (Larry) Rehlander, of Elk River, Minnesota, and David (Kim) Brue, of Forest City, Iowa; five grandchildren: Jennifer (Dan) Austin, Kelsey Brue, Laura (Rob) Linhoff, and Daniel (Maria) and Jonathon (Jodi) Rehlander; six great-grandchildren: Cassandra, Andrew, Jackson, Chason, Anna, and Alexander; a sister, Marie Luff; two sisters-in-law, Marlys and Mary Swenson; and a brother-in-law, Arnold Ottjes; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents; her brothers: Oswald, Gordon, Wallace, and James; her sister, Mildred; her brother-in-law: Donald Luff; and her sister-in-law, Amy Swenson.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 12, 2016, at Salem Lutheran Church, 401 S. Lake Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Visitation will take place between 3:00 and 5:00 PM, Sunday afternoon, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.
