June 7, 1932 - October 18, 2016

Joan W. Jacobson, 84, of Thompson, died on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Forest City.

Joan was born to Mandius (M.O.) and Austina Johnson on June 7, 1932, in rural Radcliffe, Iowa. She attended school in Thompson, graduating in 1950. First, she worked at Samuelson’s Café and Jensen Grocery/Department Store. Then, she moved to Mason City and worked at Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator. On November 14, 1951, she married Edwin Jacobson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. After Edwin was discharged from the Army, she joined him on the Jacobson family farm in June of 1953. There, she assisted him with fieldwork, livestock, and repairs.

A member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Joan, also, belonged to Farming of Yesteryear, the Thompson Museum Board, Linden No. 5 Country School at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds, the Red Hat Society, and the Farm Bureau. In addition, she helped with county elections.

The family matriarch, Joan enjoyed taking trips with family and friends. She liked to volunteer and help where needed. Moreover, she, especially, enjoyed sharing the annual 4th of July picnic with her neighbors as well as having coffee with them weekly.

Joan enjoyed cooking, creating new recipes, entering many cooking contests, and creating craft items. She, also, sewed and liked to read many books.

Joan is survived by her four children: Eugene, of Kiester, Minnesota, Elizabeth, of Buffalo Center, Steven and Kimberly, of Bricelyn, Minnesota, and Barbara and Jon Butler, of Kensett; her grandchildren: Michael, Lora, Joann, Joy, James, Brian, Ashley, and Collin; her great-grandchildren: Diallo, Josiah, Riley, Mason, Austin, Axel, Jadalynn, and Elliott; her sisters, Marcella Hauan, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Lois Bjornsen, of Forest city, Dorothy (Ralph) Zenker, of Escanaba, Michigan, Sharon (Freeman) Fox, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Linda Brandau, of Nora Springs; and her sisters-in-law, Mavis Klein, of Iowa Falls, and Ruth Hylland, of Scarville; as well as by many additional relatives and many good friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Ronald Johnson; and her brothers-in-law: Ray Hauan, Kjell Bjornsen, Harlan Brandau, Irvin Klein, and Paul Hylland.

A Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 21, 2016, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Judy Wozniak officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson and one hour before the service at the church.
