Gertrude Grace Erickson
July 19, 1919 - October 10, 2016

Gertrude G. Erickson, 97, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Monday, October 10, 2016, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.

Gertrude Grace Hord, a daughter of Clark and Daisy (Kraushaar) Hord, was born on July 19, 1919, near Alden, Minnesota. She attended and then graduated from Alden High School in 1937. On August 18, 1940, she married Melvin Erickson at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in Albert Lea, Minnesota. They farmed the next two years near New Richland, Minnesota, before moving to a farm north of Joice, Iowa. They continued working together on the farm until they moved to Lake Mills in 1980.

Gertie worked at the Cool Spring Canning Company and for Graphic Publishing in Lake Mills. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, doing hardanger, gardening, cooking, making lutefisk and lefsa, and crafting. She, also, liked to play golf and various other games including cards. Moreover, she loved to travel. She saw most of the United States and visited Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Mexico, and Canada. She even enjoyed her 80th Birthday in Cancun! Most of all, however, she enjoyed the many labors of love for the members of her family and spending time with them.

Survivors include her children, Betty (Jerry) Brunsvold, of Lake Mills, Maynard (Phyllis) Erickson, of Emmons, Minnesota, Charles (Karen) Erickson, of Alden, Minnesota, and Gerald (Lori Thompson) Erickson, of Lake Mills; twelve grandchildren: Alan and Jane Brunsvold; Angela (Jesup) DeCook; Dan (Jenny), Jason, Jeff (Ann), Marcus (Tracy), Perry (Lisa), and Trevis (Kris Allison) Erickson; Kim (Chris) Jensen; Kelly (Dan) Matz; and Jacque (James) Sorensen; twenty-six great-grandchildren: Jessica (Nick) Breamer; Noah Brunsvold; Amber, Barbara, Grace, Jon, Karina, Madison, Matthew, Mikenna, Ryker, and Tyler Erickson; Alice, Lilly, Lucas, Melissa, and Sally DeCook; Travis and Alyssa Jensen; Garrett and Taylor (Abbie Anderson) Matz; Caleb, Isaac, Jacob (fiancée Allison), and Levi Sorensen; and Ashley (Andy) Yost; and four great-great-grandchildren: Asher and Ava Breamer and Nora and Trey Yost; a sister-in-law, Hazel Hengesteg; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Brindel; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin, in 1991; a grandson, Bradley Brunsvold; a great-grandson, McCale Erickson; and four sisters: Margaret Weaver, Mary Lutz, Edna Hansing, and Waunita (Lunning) Brindel.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, October 17, 2016, at Sion Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor Steven Bang officiating. Visitation will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, October 16, 2016, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and again one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Burial will follow at Sion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
