Amelia C. Penning-Graves
October 12, 1926 - September 8, 2016Amelia Claire (McAlister) Penning Graves, 89, of Buffalo Center, entered heaven’s gates on Thursday, September 08, 2016, at the Westview Care Center in Britt. She had resided there since January, 2013. A born again believer, she strove to glorify God with her life and family.
One of five daughters born to John and Elizabeth (Rossiter) McAlister, she grew up on the family farm and received her education in a rural school near her home before graduating from Thompson High School. On October 12, 1947, she married John Penning of Buffalo Center at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Britt where they raised their six children, later moving back to the Thompson area where she helped on the family farm. John preceded her in death in May, 1990. On June 4, 1994, she married Garland Graves. He preceded her in death in March, 2010.
Amelia loved her Lord very much, having accepted Jesus as her savior when she was twenty-four years old. She, also, enjoyed listening to Christian music. Active in Bible studies, she taught Sunday school and volunteered on the KJLY prayer line as well. She enjoyed china painting, a hobby she started in 1994. Over time, she exhibited many of her pieces at the Faribault County Fair in Blue Earth, Minnesota.
She is survived by her six children, Geraldine Smith, of Cedar Rapids, Roberta Streeter, of Jefferson City, Missouri, Bernard Penning, and his wife, Theresa, of Forest City, Nancy Graber, and her husband, Gary, of Forest City, Tim Penning, of Kiester, Minnesota, and his special friend, Ruth Hagen, of Joice, Iowa, and Jerry Penning, and his fiancé, Gayle Lasley, of Thompson; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Wilder, of Lewisville, Minnesota, and Jean (Morris) Johanson, of Blue Earth, Minnesota; as well as by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John and Garland; and her sisters, Lula Thayer and Lela Long and a sister in infancy.
Amelia fought the good fight, finished her race, kept the faith, and now rests from her earthly labors. She has received the crown of life and is forever in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 12, 2016, at the Word of Faith Dominion Church, Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor Doug Domokos officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, September 11, 2016, at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center. Interment will follow in the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Titonka.
