Alex M. Winter
October 6, 1993 - August 5, 2016The youngest of two children, Alex Michael Winter was born to Kirk Dale and Cynthia Marie (Jellinek) Winter on October 6, 1993, in Mason City, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at the First Reformed Church, he attended school at and graduated from North Iowa Community Schools in 2012. He, then, went on to Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he earned an Associate’s of Applied Science in Diesel Technology degree in 2014. While attending school, he completed internships with Gary Garst and at Friesenborg and Larson.
In elementary and middle school, Alex played ice hockey in Fairmont, Minnesota. So passionate about the sport, he had his teachers believing that he was playing professionally. He began as a regular player, but after much talk, he convinced mom to let him become a goalie. As a result, the family took trips to Brookings, South Dakota, and Rochester, Minnesota, for weekend long tournaments.
In high school, Alex participated in many activities. Those included FFA, choir, swing choir, band, jazz band, fall plays, musicals, speech, bowling, and archery. By his junior year, he became interested in restoring tractors. He, fully, restored an Allis-Chalmers and John Deere for himself and an International Harvester for a friend. He would take these restorations to the Iowa State Fair and win blue ribbons on them all. He succeeded because of all the support, motivation, and expertise he received from Tracy Adams. From the very beginning, Alex saw Tracy as so much more than just a mentor.
In the summer of 2009, Alex had an opportunity of a lifetime. He went to Italy, Greece, and France with the program People to People. This program allowed him to make new memories and new friends. His family, also, went on many summer road trips and week-long vacations to Orlando.
This last year, Alex was pursuing his love of flying. He was taking lessons at the Des Moines Airport and had nearly completed the requirements for a private pilot's license. His passion for flying led him to his current job with Agri Tech Aviation in Indianola, Iowa. A member of the ground crew, he enjoyed being able to get into a plane whenever possible. Doing exactly that on that Friday morning, August 5, 2016, Alex left us with the comfort of knowing that he died doing what he loved.
His memory will always be cherished by his fiancée, Mikki Holstad, of Indianola, Iowa; his sister, Samantha (Jeff) Wittmer, of Estherville, Iowa; his grandparents, Evelyn Winter, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, and Mike and Bonnie Jellinek, of St. Paul, Minnesota; his future mother- and father-in-law, Ellen and Mike Holstad, of Thompson, Iowa; and his future brother- and sister-in-law, Logan and Cassondra Willmert, and their daughter, MacKenzie, of Lisbon, Iowa; along with aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Kirk and Cyndi, and his grandpa, George Winter.
A funeral service for Alex Winter, 22, of Buffalo Center, will be held on Friday, August 12, 2016, at 10:30 AM at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center. He will be laid to rest in Olena Mound Cemetery next to his parents. His family will greet friends from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the church and again on Friday one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alex Winter Memorial Fund which will be used to support his favorite interests.
