Phyllis Mary Ransom Crouch was born in Forest City, Iowa, on August 12, 1932, to Frank and Genevieve Ransom. She attended Forest City Schools where she participated in many music events. She played the oboe, becoming so proficient that she earned a one in a national competition held at Kansas City, Missouri. In the marching band, she played the glockenspiel. In addition, at the Forest City Methodist Church, she played the piano and organ.

After graduating from Forest City High School second in her class in June of 1950, Phyllis enrolled that fall in nurses training at Broadlawns General Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Her course of study included training at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago and the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville. She completed her RN degree in June of 1953, again graduating second in her class. She began work as a scrub nurse in the Broadlawns operating room, advancing, in time, to circulating nurse, head nurse, and finally to acting supervisor.

In April of 1955, Phyllis married John Crouch. Together, they raised two sons, David and John. Valuing higher education and helping financially through college savings Iowa, she made sure all her children and grandchildren earned master’s degrees.

Phyllis worked as a private duty scrub nurse for surgeons in whichever town John, who was an IBM electric typewriters salesman, was located. After John became an attorney and was appointed a judge in Warren County, she worked for the Iowa Department of Human Services as a nursing home inspector when that department had title nineteen responsibilities. In that capacity, she used her experience as the Director of Nursing at the Ramsey Memorial Home. Moreover, she volunteered for many worthwhile projects including the Child Abuse Prevention Council, the National Balloon Museum, Simpson Athletics, the Des Moines Metro Opera Guild, and the Kiya Koda Humane Society. She, also, read to fourth graders.

An avid card player, Phyllis belonged to five Bridge clubs and became a life member of the American Cribbage Congress. She was an avid bowler as well. In 1994, she and husband, John, received the volunteer of the year award for Greater Des Moines. A member of Chapter NG, PEO, she remained active until illness prevented her from continuing to participate.

Survivors include her husband, John; and her two sons, David (wife Karen) and John R. (wife Patti); four grandchildren: Christopher Crouch (wife Erin), Kathryn D’Souza (husband Jonathan), Michele Crouch, and William John Crouch; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Joyce Stone.
