Lorraine Bakke
September 07, 1926 - August 04, 2016Lorraine Bakke, 89, of Forest City, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
The oldest child of four children born to Amos and Edna (Tvedt) Gilbertson, Velma Lorraine Bakke was born on September 7, 1926, on a farm near Kensett, Iowa. Baptized on October 3, 1926, at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, Iowa, and confirmed on July 13, 1941, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, Iowa, she attended country school and then graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1944. The family had moved to the Hanlontown area in 1929. Then, she began work as a bookkeeper for the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Hanlontown where she met her future husband, Iner R. (Ray) Bakke. Ray and Lorraine married on August 3, 1947, and spent fifty-nine years together before his death in early 2007.
A homemaker before all the children had started school, Lorraine began working for G & H Motor Parts in Forest City in 1965. In 1971, she went to work for Winnebago Industries in the payroll department where she, eventually, became Paymaster. She held this position until she retired in 1990. In the days before automatic deposit, she became the most popular lady at the factory on Fridays when she delivered payroll checks. After she retired, she and Ray spent winters first in Arizona and later in Harlingen, Texas.
An active member of Fertile Lutheran Church, she participated in the Ladies Aid Society and served as treasurer of the church for many years. In addition, she volunteered at Mercy Family Care at both the Lake Mills and Forest City offices, amassing more than 4,500 hours. Avid dancers, Ray and Lorraine spent many enjoyable evenings at the VFW and the Surf Ballroom. They even taught ballroom dancing for several years at NIACC. Lorraine, regularly, watched Dancing with the Stars, tablet in hand, so she could keep score and follow the action from week to week. She had a phenomenal memory and knew who was related to whom, where they lived, and when the departed had died.
Lorraine is survived by her three children: Steven (Anne), of Forest City, Iowa, Craig (Judy), of Bucklin, Missouri, and Carolyn Swanson, of Urbandale, Iowa; six grandchildren: Aaron Bakke (Keiru), of Newark, California, Laura Bakke, of Seattle, Washington, Ryan Bakke (Jana), of Urbandale, Iowa, Rachel Holmberg (Trent), of Adel, Iowa, Tim Colby (Tami), of Ankeny, Iowa, and Katy Blomgren (James), of Cumming, Iowa; twelve great-grandchildren: Ajay, Alayna, Ashlyn, Celestina, and Langston Bakke; Bennett, Hunter, and Madelyn Blomgren; Aidan and Keaton Colby; and Harper and Walker Holmberg; two step-granddaughters, Stacy Moore, of Ogden, Utah, and Kristine Swanson-Jordal, of Mentone, California; three step-great-grandchildren: Chandler and Travis Moore and Luke Swanson-Jordal; a sister, Darlene Ziesmer, of Garner, Iowa; and a brother, James Gilbertson (Judy), of Ackley, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and her best friend of more than sixty years, Romane Lovik.
