Last Friday morning the residents of this vicinity were shocked and grieved to hear of the sudden death of Halvor H. Nyhus, an old resident of Ellington township. Mr. Nyhus had been in this city Wednesday, calling on old acquaintances and seemed to feel perfectly well. He went home and Thursday upon arising complained that he was not feeling very well but was able to be about. Later in the day, however, he became seriously ill and a doctor was called. The doctor diagnosed the case as paralysis. Death came about seven o'clock Thursday evening. Funeral services were held from the Ellington Lutheran church by Rev. Hjelmeland of Fertile, Tuesday afternoon, of this week.
Halvor H. Nyhus was born in Norway, March 4,1850. At the age of nineteen, in 1869, he came to the United States with his parents and settled with them in Dodge county, Minnesota, where he lived for about a year, when he accompanied his parents to Hancock county, Iowa, where they have resided ever since. Mr. Nyhus was married to Betsy Larson Walle on March 10, 1879. Four children were born to this union, all of whom are still living: Henry of Newton township; Louis, of Mt. Valley township; Otis, who is residing at the home of his parents; and Mrs. Ole Engbretson, of Elkader, Iowa. Clayton county. His wife also survives him. During his residence in this vicinity, Mr. Nyhus has been an influential citizen, a diligent church member and respected by everyone who knew him. His death is a great loss to the community.
